Google Maps: further Street Views
Google has expanded its Google Maps feature ‘Street View’ to encompass more cities.
It’s been clear that the search engine giant would continue to elaborate on its panorama view offering Street View (see our earlier article). The Street View fleet has been again on the road for many weeks in a range of USA cities, shooting photos for the controversial application. The first results are visible in the US-version of Google Maps. As of the beginning of this week, there are now high-resolution 360º views for selected streets in Los Angeles, San Diego, Houston and Orlando. Product Manager for Google Maps, Stephen Chau, announced this in Google’s Lat Long Blog. With these additions, the tally of US cities represented rises to nine, and more are certainly expected to come.
For users, this function is really nice. Less nice, is that some people were photographed without their knowledge and are visible on the web. On some of the high-def photos, clear details of people’s faces and motor vehicle license plates are recognizable. This has spurred a search for weird, embarrassing or funny photos for a certain segment of web surfers. This will surely be cause for coming discussion and debate.
