Points of Interest: Is Twitter Becoming a Real-Time Directory?

Twitter’s next try at the local search: the tweeting service announced a new feature at the Chirp-Conference in San Francisco, which is considered to be the first step to becoming a local directory – Points of Interest. Whether or not this will be a “local search tsunami” or the “Trojan horse of local search”, as predicted by Andrew Shotland from Search Engine Land, only time can tell.

In any case, there are some new features that may be of interest. After the whole geotagging from tweets, POIs are another big step forward. In plain English: to consider the new feature as a counterpart to Google Place Pages is simple enough, when you take into consideration that the user can follow all the tweets in a specific area.
It will be interesting to see when the further consequences emerge. Shotland imagines one senario: Twitter, as he believes, will sooner or later make itself available to every local provider, including the option to see the tweets of users in the area as well as photos, ratings, and tips. Further, Twitter will buy information from the Yellow Pages to access the local side. If that’s not enough, the pages will be easily indexed and will flood all current searches…which brings us back to the tsunami…
