City.com: Great URL! Great Idea?

City.com is a new search engine whose concept can be called an “all in one”. The maps from Google, the events from Yahoo!, and all of that available on Twitter and Facebook – but is this new service really all it makes itself out to be?

Yet another rating portal on the market…The closest restaurants, hotels, fashion stores, or even wellness spas are super easy to find, as well as the quickest route to get there, and event the option to rate the results, or to see the recommendations of other users…pretty much the same old, same old from every other local search engine on the market. So what’s so special about this newbie from New York? The makers of the site answered with: “City.com has the luxury of learning from its competitor’s mistakes and avoiding their pitfalls.”
This advantage is definitely head on with Yelp. The community recently hat to deal with some major allegations that they’ve accepted cash in return for deleting negative ratings. The promises are otherwise kosher, such as “becoming the preeminent relationship manager for local businesses who are seeking cost effective local marketing strategies.” Thanks to their cooperation with more than 100 local search engines, including Google, Yahoo!, Bing, and Yellowpages.com, the New Yorkers offer the possibility to link the data of their customers. The not-so-new advertising concept from Google AdSense isn’t exactly winning the gold medal for originality, though the developers claim this is only a provisional transition. Chief blogger Greg Sterling rates the whole thing as mediocre.
