Gowalla: Friends Served on the Tablet

The check-in service Gowalla released a special application from the iPad at the end of April. Whoever downloads the free software can now see exactly where their friends are and what they’re up to with the help of Google Maps.
Some of the other features, such as the ability to post comments, profile managing, or marking locations, are modeled after the iPhone versions. It’s definitely more fun on the bigger display of the Apple Tablet-PC, but the question is whether or not the device is really designated for such mobile-based applications for Location Based Services.
Time will only show how many people are going to be running around with the iPad clutched in their hands, off to the next trendy café, restaurant, designer boutiques, or bar and then uses it to check into Gowalla.
That’s the exact reason competitor Foursquare is holding back. According to a report from the New York Times, the company is continuing to focus on applications for the iPhone, Blackberry, and Android. If there ever should be a special iPad app, Foursquare wants to wait and see how the usage of the iPad develops. Speaking of iPhone, the software can also be downloaded on the Tablet-PC, but with restricted fuctions.
