Nothing New for Foursquare, but SCVNGR is On a Roll

In an interview with CkickZ News, Foursquare has officially denied that there are no plans for any data partnerships with Google, Yahoo, or Bing as reported by the Daily Telegraph. The Telegraph’s interview with Foursquare’s CEO Dennis Crowley took a statement from the CEO out of context:

“We can anonymise data and use it to show venues which are trending at that moment. Twitter helped the world and the search engines know what people are talking about. Foursquare would allow people to search for the types of place people are going to – and where is trending – not what.”

As a response to Crowley’s quote, wrote the Telegraph:

“Crowley did not give a timeframe as to when the search deals could be signed off, but said it was an exciting time and the company was talking to ‘a lot of different potential partners’ which were interested in Foursquare’s data.”

A spokesperson from Foursquare declared that the statements from Crowley were simply hypothetical and had nothing to do with current negotiations between the companies.

But there is some new and exciting news for the check-in world: Four those of you who haven’t heard of SCVNGR before, it’s a game. Playing is simple: Go places. Do challenges. Earn points! Players unlock badges, earn rewards and broadcast their location & activity out to their social graph. Powered by search engine giant Google, the company has developed an awesome new way to check in with friends, with the “social checkin,” a new feature available on the SCVNGR Android and iPhone application.

SCVNGR’s blog stated on July 20th: “Launching today, the social check-in on SCVNGR allows you to check-in at places with a friend or two or 1,000, simply by bumping phones. Checking-in alone is fun, but checking-in with friends is WAY MORE FUN!
SCVNGR’s cool new tech can connect an unlimited number of iPhones and Androids at a place. Another sweet feature: when you post your social check-in out to Facebook or Twitter, it will @mention everyone you checked-in with. So basically, you can celebrate the fact that you’re going places with friends!”

So essentially, the new feature encourages users to bump phones to check in together simultaneously. It’s like a high-tech toast.

SCVNGR describes itself as a dynamical game platform with enormous potential. It is the up-and-coming check-in program and competition, like Foursquare and Gowalla, are definitely going to have to keep an eye over their shoulders if they don’t want to get too overwhelmed.

Users have the capability to build upon the game simply by playing it in different locations. This dynamic growth principle is SCVNGR’s advantage: the game can’t get old.

The application has the potential of becoming the future of social networking: earning points for checking in at new locations and bonuses for checking in with friends, all the while participating in the further development of the game. What more could you ask for?
