Now Even More Social: Check-Ins by SCVNGR
Check-ins have actually always been social: whether through Foursquare, Gowalla, and whatever other programs that are out there, checking-in and letting your friends know where you are and what you’re up to is just about the most “social” feature available by location-based sevices. So what does it mean when competitor SCVNGR is talking about “social check-ins?”
The idea is actually nothing different than what all the other check-in services offer. You go into a store, pull up the app, look for the store in a given area, and click on it to check-in. And for all of this you get a point. But now, you’ve got the possibility to increase point accumulation by checking-in together with friends. To do this, the participants just have to put their cell phones (so long as they’re an Android or an iPhone) together after clicking the “check-in” button, clinking phones as one would while drinking a glass of champagne together. Each person who checks in then receives two points.
Mashable’s Jennifer Van Grove is already looking forward to the record-breaking try for the world’s largest check-in. More than anything else, though, the blogger recognizes the huge marketing potential. Clever business owners will hopefully catch on to using SCVNGR to get large groups of customers to check into their stores. It’s definitely not a bad idea.
SCVNGR, coincidentally founded in the hometown of MIT of Cambridge (not far from Boston), was developed on the principle of being a mobile community game. Thanks to its advanced location-based check-ins, the project has remained interesting enough that even Google has caught on, investing four million dollars into the company just a few weeks ago. But the search engine giant has officially made its first step into the world of location-based services.
