Google and the Social Problem: Reviews instead of a Wave
Google is still treading on eggshells when it comes to its social media route. Wave has finally been put to rest and Places is getting an extra treat for business owners: they can now directly respond to user ratings.
Ratings in the net are just about the scariest things in the world for businesses. Malicious critics, insults, and curses – the scenario couldn’t be worse for business owners. Even if it’s just a joke – as an example, only about five percent of users of golocal distribute one of five possible stars; for qype it’s similar.
But whoever is afraid pays close attention to the facts. Consequently, Google, like Yelp and CitySearch already have, has jumped on the bandwagon and now offers businesses the opportunity to directly react to user opinions about products and services. That could relieve the fear a bit, but it can also prevent reckless users from going wild and help them to write a more “down-to-earth” review, as they now know that something might come back…
In addition, Mountain View is taking a step back to another social media construction site: the days for Wave are numbered, as the makers released the most unnoticeable signature possible: “Google Wave Update”. The reason: the users never caught on to the project. Even if Google is going whine, Wave was highly celebrated at the announcement of its release last year. But the launch was a complete social media disaster. To let hundreds of thousands of interested parties wait for the registration because users can only join when invited by a preferred user, well, we don’t need to wonder about why the entire idea was a major flop.
Nice try, Google.
