See ya Foursquare and Gowalla! Careful Google! Facebook’s started Places…

Mark Zuckerberg has officially announced the release of the long awaited Facebook Places. As usual, the service will unfortunately be only available in the USA for now, but in the updates iPhone-App, you can take a look at where you’ve got to click…

The web is going insane with the rumors about the new feature, which is already being viewed as a killer-app for other location based services. Discussions about Places are non-stop on Facebook. No surprise there: the community has been looking forward to this one for months.

Facebook wrote in a post:

“Today, we’re excited to announce the launch of Facebook Places! Places gives users the ability to share where they are, find their friends and discover interesting places nearby. As a business, Places provides you with a presence on Facebook- encouraging your customers to share that they’ve visited your business by “checking in” to your Place.”

Here is the video for the official release:

Aside from the question of what the feature will actually offer, the biggest questions to get sent out, just a few hours after the release, included: what is gonna happe with Foursquare, Gowalla, and Co.? A lot of Facebook users have used Facebook to post their check-ins because the feature was only interesting to them in the large community. If Facebook is changing into a location-based service itself, then what is even the use of the other ones? And not to forget about Google Places – is the clash of the titans coming?

What’s your opinion?
