I’m here, who’s there?: Message Sharing with qilroy and Message Party
“Kilroy was here” – the little graffiti with the respective saying should be the most famous in the world. When a service calls itself qilroy, the its name is program. The new spin-off of the American cell provider Qualcomm shows its users who, in a given local area, is currently updating on Facebook, Twitter, and Gowalla. On the flip side, whoever uses MessageParty can chat with people in the local area.
qilroy still has quite a few kinks in the Beta, but is certainly promising to people interested in sharing current information with other individuals in the area. This could be useful in, for example, a situation when you’re on your way to the movies or theater and you want to know how the lines are, or if you want to see if the open-air concert is still going on tonight, even if it’s going to rain.
The makers of qilroy, located in San Diego, California, are not afraid of being squished by the big guys. On the contrary: without the location features from Twitter, Gowalla, and now Facebook, there wouldn’t even be a qilroy, they say. Certainly a good point…
Also headed straight on without any fear, MessageParty’s iPhone-App allows users located within 1.5km (1 mile) of each other to chat. The newbie got some much needed help from the investing firm Y Combinator, who often gives out small donations up to $20,000 to smart ideas.
It should be interesting to see if MessageParty really has a chance, seeing as how people who aren’t far away from each other don’t actually have to chat, but can speak face-to-face, right? The demo-video doesn’t miss a shot at helping get the idea going.
