Mayor – who cares?

Even if – or maybe even because – Facebook just fueled the check-in hype with Places, the veterans in the market, Foursquare and Gowalla, are being as boring as rocks. At least Foursquare wants to release a new feature, though. Whoever has been religiously checking-in in their favorite café or movie theater never could find out whether or not they could become the “mayor” of this location. The requirements to do so are to make sure that no one has checked-in to any one location more than you in the last 60 days. Only one check-in per day counts.
Now, Foursquare wants to bring some more excitement into the game: the service will now be revealing to its users just how many more days they have to check-in somewhere in order to become mayor. Will this be able to save the service that’s already losing its luster?
