Foursquare’s Relaunch: Yawn 2.0?

Check-ins were once the hit when it came to location-based services. But we all know how it works out for hits: even they wear out. Foursquare is now trying to make a comeback with the 2.0 version of their app. They’re bringing a few new ideas in and a lot of disappointments.
The newcomer came into the market and since then hasn’t had much going on other than a couple of visual upgrades and an edited user direction (Places). And let’s be honest, who really cares about checking into a café or a clothing store? Nevertheless, Foursquare is growing and now has over three million users worldwide. But since the start of Facebook Places, the site has new things to worry about: just offering check-ins is not going to get Foursquare anywhere.
Foursquare’s current response to the demands of new innovations only manages to bring in a few yawns. In the 2.0 version app for the iPhone – available soon for Android and Blackberry – Foursquare offers a tips and to-do list feature. Come again? Right – there’s nothing new here, just a more prominent platform. They were there before – just a little harder to find. Now they have their own little buttons on the homepage.
As if that isn’t enough, the usability of the feature isn’t quite up to standard, as describe so well by MC Siegler from TechCrunch. Why would anyone need to add tips to your to-do list, when they still have their own column?
Siegler states, “I think Foursquare still needs to add some functionality beyond this if they truly wish to move beyond the check-in.” There is especially some work to be done in the coupons sector. It’s always been a complete coisidence if a store that someone checks into was having some sort of a promotion. It would be much better if stores could attract customers by advertising their promotions before check-ins, similar to how Groupon and The Dealmap have done.
