Google Adds User Rating to Local Search
In mid-November, the internet giant Google launched a recommendation platform with its new service Hotpot. With the release, a wave of competition drive has swept over online networks. Hotpot highlights ratings from friends in localized searches, and is integrated with Google’s local directory service Places.
Whether or not Google can keep up with Facebook, which now has over 500 million members worldwide, is yet to be seen. Especially since Microsoft linked its search engine Bing to the community about a month ago. And, just a few hours before Google announced Hotpot, Facebook presented its concept of linking email, chat, and SMS to its messaging system. This means that users should be able to communicate with friends in their community and even non-members through all cables and devices.
Google has never really been successful in the social media realm, shown by its online network Orkut. It will have to prove itself an admiral adversary to other, more favored rating portals like Qype, yelp, or KennstDuEinen.
