Vodafone invests in Qype

Vodafone Ventures, the investment department of the cellular company, has given Qype a cash injection of 3.5 million Euro. An additional 3 million Euro is being given to the popular local recommendation portal by existing investors, Advent Venture Partners, Partech International, and Wellington Partners. Qype plans on working on its mobile applications from the whopping 6.5 million Euro.

Qype’s CEO, Ian Brotherston, explains that the future is mobile, which is why the company is working so hard to develop new functions and possibilities for users. In January 2009, Qype introduced their first app for the iPhone, followed shortly by apps for Androids and Blackberrys. Since then, about one million European users have downloaded the Qype app, from which users can view community recommendations and even make their own.

With Vodafone’s investment, Qype’s application will also be standard on the mobile company’s devices: in the main European markets on the company, a so-called Co-Branding version of Qype will be preinstalled.

With fresh new capital, Qype is laying out a path to success. In March 2006, Qype was launched and is now one Europe’s largest communities for ratings and recommendations for services, places, and events. According to Qype, 158,000 European cities are on the list and the site has 17 million visitors per month.
