Watch out ‘sex offenders’: Augmented Reality is tracking you!
Really good or really twisted? Another typical move for the USA, or will something like this soon be available in Germany? The person search engine BeenVerified has now launched a mobile application that warns users when they enter the proximity of registered sex offenders. The program works with augmented reality.
BeenVerified is a self-titled spy engine in the American internet. Whenever someone wants to know a few details about the background or whereabouts of a person or company, then they should benefit from the data provided by the site. Friends and acquaintances that have disappeared throughout the years, as well as any criminal records of a prospective employee – with just a click, BeenVerified can help. Sounds like CIA work, but by American standards it’s pretty mundane. The service can only help provide information that is already available – it’s just a bit easier to find.
Sucks for those who have had their criminal record published in the net from the law enforcement agency, as in the case of sex offenders – some even before they were convicted – in the United States. BeenVerified jumped on the opportunity and has added the address information from the sex offenders into their augmented reality application. So whoever wants that extra safe feeling while walking down the street can hold the iPhone or Android camera to look and see if any registered sex offenders are in the vicinity. Depending on availability, personal data, such as the name, postal address, the crime committed, and even a photograph can be displayed – this makes detour finding much easier.
BeenVerified advertises with a questionable video with the help of the C-List star Antoine Dodson, who gained stardome with the help of an interview following the alleged rape of his sister. The app costs $1.99, and 5% of the proceeds go to the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network RAINN.
