Google Allegedly Takes Over Groupon

A lot of hot air or is it the truth? For quite a few weeks now, there have been rumors that Groupon is being taken over by Google. And now, according to media reports on December 1st, Google offered the US market leader for online-couponing 5.3 billion dollars. With this kind of a deal, the search engine giant may become the leading provider for online and mobile deals.

Online-couponing has been making serious gains in local advertising. The 2008 leader in the department was Groupon, which took the place of CityDeal in Germany in May of this year. The company has found numerous copycats in many countries worldwide and has provided for a boom in coupon platforms. Should Google really take over Groupon, the services and features of the voucher provider would be a perfect addition to Google Places in making the local based-marketing campaigns even more interesting.

Groupon and other online coupon portals offer products and services from the region with sometimes enormous price discounts. Deal searchers can print out the so called coupons, modern, digital discount tickets, or, which is becoming more common, pull up the coupon on their cellular screen and get a major discount for the product or service.
