Nokia and Microsoft: Shared Smartphone Plans

The Finnish mobile provider Nokia wants to win back its power in the world of cellular devices with help from Microsoft: Last week, the companies announced their collaboration in the making of a new smartphone, which they hope to have as a major competitor of Apple and Google.

Since the release of Apple’s iPhone and the Android operating system from Google, which is available on various cellular devices, Nokia hasn’t been able to hold its position as leader of smartphones. With the cooperation with Microsoft, this should all change. In the future, Microsoft’s Windows Phone 7 will become the central platform of Nokia. This means: devices will soon be released with Microsoft’s operating system and Bing-search integrated. Nokia will be contributing its map service Maps for local searches. The two global corporations want to further develop the Windows Phone 7 and market it. The goal is to develop a competitive “ecosystem”. It’s now a “three-horse-race,” said Nokia’s boss Stephen Elop in the official press conference.
