Every Second German On a Social Network
Online communities are gaining popularity at an exponential rate: the number of German users has grown by 10 million users within a year, as shown in the study “Social Networks in Germany”, conducted by the high-tech association BITKOM at the polling firm Forsa. In addition, about 40 million, or half of all federal citizens, are active in social networks. And which community is leading the pack? Facebook, of course.
”Social networks have grown from a special niche to internet standards in a short amount of time,” comments Achim Berg, BITKOM’s vice president. Forsa surveyed 1,001 German-speaking internet users over 14 years of age. The census shows that not only is every second German a member of a social network, but that about 76 percent of all internet users are active members, and 96 percent of users under the age of 30 are also users of social networks. And these users tend to be active in more than one community: the average user is active in 2.4 online communities and has about 133 contacts. Young women are the most avid users.
The top 10 list of social networks is led by the site that has a total of 600 million users worldwide: 47 percent of German internet users are members of Facebook. VZ networks share second place with the Stayfriends community at 27 percent. This is followed by Wer-kennt-wen with 24 percent of users. Immediately following this, the percentage drops dramatically: fourth place is taken by the professional networking community Xing with nine percent, followed by Myspace and Twitter, both with seven percent.
