Facebook Planning Social Search

Mark Zuckerberg’s latest move may be the decision maker: Facebook has just applied for a patent for a search algorithm for its social network. With the new algorithm, Facebook may soon be able to introduce a search engine to its community members showing the links that their friends have also clicked on.
The new Facebook patents is officially titled: “Ranking Search Results Based on the Frequency of Access on the Search Results by Users of a Social-Networking System.” In other words, when users search for something on the web, results will be ranked according to how many users on the social network have previously clicked on them.

Facebook may begin integrating this new search option into its social network to develop it into an innovative social search engine. One thing is for certain: Facebook’s patent is a huge threat to Google, Microsoft, and other competitors. Considering the possibilities, such as linking community ratings and comments into the search results, this may be the start of a new era of searching. Users will no longer be faced with pages of uninteresting results, but will have the most relevant pieces laid right in front of them.

Google has also taken a step in the social direction with its +1 button, but there is no possibility to interact with other users. Facebook’s network offers this, and any possible search engine that Zuckerberg’s team might pull out of its hat will probably do the same. We will wait patiently for the next move…
