Google Germany: No Stop for Street View
While Microsoft is worrying about dealing with German data protection agents for its geodata-service Streetside as part of the local search engine Bing Maps, Google’s panorama view service is worrying about much different things. Media reports have reported that the company will be putting a stop to its project Street View in Germany. This isn’t the case, however. The quote from a Google representative was misinterpreted.
Search Engine Land reported that the search engine giant would halt further collections of photos and that a Google rep. had said the company has “no plans to launch new imagery on Street View in Germany.” Google speaker Kay Oberbeck repudiates this and told heise online, the dpa, and a number of other media sources that the company has not halted its project Street View in Germany. It is true that there are no current plans to publicize any further photos for Germany, but this does not mean that the service will be suspended. The company does not currently see any need to collect more photos, as the current line has only been online for a few months. The camera vehicles rolled through Germany just again at the end of March. The photos will not be used for Street View, however, but for improvements on Google Maps.
