Google Sends +1 On World Tour and Follows Facebook’s Suit

For quite some time, the Google recommendation button with which users could rate websites or search results with “this is cool” was only available on the English version of google.com. As of this week, the search engine giant is making the +1 button available worldwide, starting with google.de, google.co.uk, and google.fr. More countries should be made available soon, according to the Google-Webmaster-Blog. As if that weren’t enough: at pretty much the same time, the company started up its social network project Google+ as an alternative to Facebook.
The +1 button will not only be integrated with international versions of the site, but also on other websites. Partnerships with online editions of the, say, Süddeutsche Zeitung or The Telegraph, as well as other portals, will be made available. The recommendation button will not only be limitied to the results of a Google search, but also available under articles, posts, or audio-data on other websites. So someone taking a look at on online newspaper will see, much like the Facebook “like” button, the Google version. This form of expansion is made available by adding the Google button to a personal website: the + button tool is available in 44 languages.

With the new Google+ project, the company has begun creating a social network in the style of Facebook: in a field study, users can participate in the project. Whoever registers and the receives an invitation can begin separating contacts into groups and communicate with the so-called “circles” through the exchange of photos, videos, etc. Google wants to eliminate “the problem [is] that today’s online services turn friendship into fast food—wrapping everyone in “friend” paper—and sharing really suffers,” according to Vic Gundotra in the Google blog. In other words, exactly what we criticized about the +1 button is being worked on. But there is a lot more to the Google+ community: community members can chat with several users at a time with the video chat feature, allowing them to meet up “face-to-face” and chat. In addition, well-known tools like Google Maps are available alongside the traditional search. There is also a mobile version of the site, and app in the Android Market, and an app for the App Store should be coming soon.

With Google+, the company may not only further develop its social network after the test phase, but also directly integrate these options into its search engine. Google could really advance into a major competitor for Facebook. “We’d like to bring the nuance and richness of real-life sharing to software,” Vic Gundotra declares, which implies an ambition to do just that. The project was created with the idea to improve upon Google by including users, their contacts, and their interests in the software.
