Coupies Releases Mobile-Web App – Is the Universal App Coming?

The self-proclaimed largest couponing marketplace in Germany Coupies is now offering in addition to its apps for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Nokie, as well as the operating system Windows Mobile and Java, a new web standard HTML5 based browser-application. This is hardly different to the iPhone app, claims the company, but does have one advantage: it works on many more devices and allows more people to use the mobile discounts. With the release, Coupies is delivering material for speculation about the general production of applications.
In the developer and app provider scene, there is now a heated debated as to whether or not specially designed apps for various smartphones is really the future of apps, or if the internet browsers for web applications are going to have a comeback on the cellular display. The latter works on any internet-capable cellular device that can support HTML5. What’s especially interesting is that well-known producers of mobile services wouldn’t have to program apps for different mobiles if they can offer a single app that works universally. That would mean there would be a significant saving of time, money, and care saved, and that new features could be developed much quicker.
