Facebook Places and Deals Out
The social network Facebook has been given a facelift in the past week: Almost one year after its release, Facebook announced early last week that its location-based service Facebook Places would be killed off. Later in the week, the network also announced that its online-coupon market, Deals, would also be killed off. But this doesn’t completely mean that Facebook is leaving the location-based market. The social network added that its check-in deal service will still be offered, albeit a bit different than previously.
“After testing Deals for four months, we’ve decided to end our Deals product in the coming weeks. We think there is a lot of power in a social approach to driving people into local businesses. We remain committed to building products to help local businesses connect with people, like Ads, Pages, Sponsored Stories, and Check-in Deals. We’ve learned a lot from our test and we’ll continue to evaluate how to best serve local businesses,” explained Facebook in a statement.
After users check-in using their smartphone device, deals being offered by the local business will automatically be displayed under the user’s status update. By clicking this, users will be directed to a page where they can follow instructions in order to take advantage of the deal.

I was wondering about how many more deal services could survive in that overcrowded market.
