Facebook: Subscribe Even To Strangers

Just one day after announcing the improved friends lists, Facebook employee Zach Rait introduced the new “subscribe” button in a blog post. The new function reminds users a bit of Twitter, als the following option, or subscribe option, allows users to subscribe to posts from others with whom they are not even friends with on Facebook.

Aside from that, the new button allows users to define if they want to see all updates in the newsfeed, most of them, or just the most important. There is also a possibility to define what kind of information should be posted – for example photos, or no posts about games.

The subscribe button is currently an optional function: it only appears in the profile if the user wants it to. All users can decide for themselves whether or not they want to take advantage of this option. Those that make their status update viewable for all can get this option by going to the subscription site and by clicking “allow subscriptions”. Facebook is paying close attention to transparency by letting users see who has subscribed to their entries.
