Google+ Stirring Up A Storm: Traffic Increase of 1269%!?

Google+ is making waves in the social media domain. After the site officially went public last week, traffic increased 1269%, according to new data from Experian Hitwise. Google+’s ranking thereby went from 54th to 8th within one week in Hitwise’s Social Networking and Forums category. The new success should cause for some unrest amongst the competitors at Facebook, which conveniently released a number of new features last week, many of which have been criticized as ‘copying’ Google+. Nevertheless, Google+ is proving itself to be a serious threat to other social networks out there.
The data provided by Hitwise does not even include mobile users or those who are redirected from the black toolbar. This would implicate that the real number of visits may be much higher. Nevertheless, Google has also planned out their release of new features, announcing several new ones along with the announcement that Google+ would be available for all. And this week, Google has announced that users can begin sharing their circles, making ‘networking’ even easier for Google+ users. Google engineer Owen Prater said the following in regards to the new feature:

“One of my favorite parts about circles is how they help me control who I share with, as well as what I read. In fact, many of you have created lots of great circles around topics that interest you (like Photographers) to bring lots of great content to your stream. In these cases, we’ve heard that you actually want to share your circles with others. Both to save your friends some time, and to connect them with interesting people and content.”
