Google’s Shopping Spree Continues: Berlin-Based DailyDeal Purchased
They just keep going and going: shortly after purchasing the rating-service Zagat, Google has now purchased the Berlin-based start-up DailyDeal.de, an online coupon site founded in December 2009. With the purchase, Google is making clear that it isn’t afraid of the online coupon market, and is signaling its intention to expand own service Google Offers to Europe.
Google has yet to comment on their acquisition of the German website, but DailyDeal.de, which offers deals within Germany, Austria and Switzerland, did comment on the new deal:
“[W]e’re excited to announce that we’ve been acquired by Google! What began as a two-person startup less than two years ago has transformed into a trusted platform to connect businesses with consumers. By combining our expertise with the Offers team at Google, we hope to expand our efforts to provide even greater deals to consumers.”
DailyDeal was founded by two brothers, Fabian and Ferry Heilemann, who will both stay on the team. The company has announced plans to expand to a wider European audience, with Scandinavia, Belgium, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg as the next possible markets. As a result, the company expects to record around €40 million in 2011 alone.
