Facebook Announces News-Ticker and Timeline
Well well well, if this isn’t a prompt response to the new features on Google+: at the developer conference F8, the founder and CEO of Facebook Mark Zuckerberg introduced some dramatic changes to the largest social network. Facebook will be developing the profiles, or the core of Facebook, into Timelines. The Timeline will allow users to tell the story of their lives on a page. In addition, the team introduced a ticker that shows news in real-time.
In the Timeline, users can display the most important events of their lives in a magazine-style format – from the places that they’ve logged on the most, to jobs, photos, music, and films that they’ve seen, or apps that they use. With the “Reports” feature, it is also possible to get a summary of a user’s activity. Users can register for the profile in advance, or it will be made available for all in the next few weeks.
In addition to these updates, users can also being showing others which news articles they’ve been reading, what kind of music they are listening to, and which films they have rented. With the live-ticker, Facebook users can see what their friends are up to in this moment.
Facebook seems to be introducing a lot of changes as of late. First the subscribe button, then friends lists, and now a completely new profile and additional functions, all designed to retain users. But especially the new features have stirred up a storm with data protection agencies and its 800 million users. Although Facebook assures users that they have control over their data, there is some speculation that Facebook’s transparency is not what it should be.
