Smartphones: Location-Based Services’ Growing Demand
Just in time for the release of Apple’s iPhone 4S on October 14th of this year, there were camp-like conditions in front of Apple stores worldwide. Some waited the entire night in sleeping bags for the opening. Hard to believe: every second German who has a smartphone is interested in purchasing the iPhone 4S. This was the conclusion of a recent study conducted by Gelbe Seiten. In addition: smartphone users value the local search apps right behind the basic functions. This is explained in a post by the Local Search Blog’s own Ben Broshi, thanks to a combination of different technologies that make local search more simple and elegant.
Already, one in two of the surveyed 1000 users by Ears and Eyes have a mobile do-it-all device. And how do these users use them in everyday life? For 90 percent of the users, placing calls and writing messages are the most important features on their devices. For 72 percent, the use of local search apps to search for addresses or get directions follows close behind. 64 percent of the users check the news and/or weather with their devices. Local information is very important for users: one in two rates shops, bars, doctors, and handyworkers in their area with their devices.
The high demand for the new iPhone that the smartphone boom is continuing strong. CEO of Gelbe Seiten Markteting GmbH Stephan Theiss concludes: “Users see a necessary help in their life through these devices. Apps for location-based services and navigation help are on the rise.” Smartphones are helpful to users in finding goals in their area, and can help lead the user there. Thiess therefore sees important reasons as to why the app from Gelbe Seiten has also been successful.
With the ever-changing technologie like in the new iPhone 4S, mobile local search is ever-growing and becoming more and more an everyday helper. The location-based service boom has a way to go before it reaches its climax…
