Bing Maps Streetside: Panorma Pictures Now In Germany
Microsoft has released its geodata service “Streetside” in Germany as a new feature on its local search engine, “Bing Maps”. Bing Maps has thus become a competitor on the same level of “Google Maps”, which has offered its own panoramic image service “Street View” for about a year.
With the launch of Bing Maps Streetside, users can view 360 degree images of the cities Augsburg, Berlin, Darmstadt, Düsseldorf, Essen, Frankfurt am Main, Ingolstadt, Mainz, München, Nürnberg, Offenbach am Main, Regensburg, Stuttgart, Wiesbaden and Würzburg. According to the company, more cities will be added as soon as more images become available. Since the summer of 2011, Microsoft’s specially designed vehicles with panoramic cameras have been on the streets of Germany – and they aren’t finished yet. The focus was placed on streets with stores and public facilities, writes Thomas Baumgärtner from the German Microsoft PR-Team in a press blog.
On the front end there has been some chaos with Streetside’s launch: as with Google’s Street View, data protection agencies have demanded the possibility for house residents to remove unwanted images from being posted. Initially, Microsoft had declined and justified its service by citing a data-protection code for geodata services from Bitkom, which was agreed upon by the company. The code sees contradictions in retrospect. Microsoft apparently grew weary of the quarreling in June 2011 and offered the possibility of objecting publication of unwanted images. Users still have the possibility to do so.
