Microsoft and OpenStreetMap Working Closer Together

Microsoft’s Bing has been using free map material from the community project OpenStreetMap for their local offering with Bing Maps for a while now. The data exchange is now being intensified due to Steve Coast’s, OpenStreetMap’s founder, new job at Microsoft. Coast, as a leading manager, will be responsible for the integration of the Open Source Maps (OSM) to Bing Mobile, according to the Bing Blog. In return, OpenStreetMap will have access to the high-resolution aerials from Microsoft as well as a supporting software which would help simplify the mapping process through OpenStreetMap. Google Gets a Slap in the Face: Groupon Declines Multibillion Dollar Deal

Oh goodness…Google’s deal with Groupon was pretty much as good as signed and sealed according to media reports (we report), but now it seems as if the deal has fallen through. Starting immediately, the local search engine suchen.de provides ratings for the search results. This is made possible through the partnership with the rating-community golocal. Those that search suchen.de for products and services within a city will now find the ratings that the members of the golocal community gave to the coordinating vendor, in addition to basic information such as contact information or hours of operation. More Turbulance for Google: EU Launches Cartel Investigation Against Google


Because some of the competition felt as if they were disadvantaged by list placement in searches, the European Commission has began investigating cartel allegations against Google. If the antitrust authority declares the search engine giant guilty of monopolistic practices and for breaking the European laws against cartels, Google may face a fine of up to ten percent of its profit. Vodafone invests in Qype


Vodafone Ventures, the investment department of the cellular company, has given Qype a cash injection of 3.5 million Euro. An additional 3 million Euro is being given to the popular local recommendation portal by existing investors, Advent Venture Partners, Partech International, and Wellington Partners. Google Street View Now for 20 German Cities


The internet giant has really put the pedal to the medal, taking panorama shots of cities all over Germany. At the beginning of November, the map service Google Maps posted the first 360 degree views of famous sights in five cities, ten soccer stadiums, and the neighborhood of Oberstaufen in Allgäu online (we report).
