Homepages and Mobile Services for Small/Mid-sized Companies Are Profit-Makers for Directory Publications

“Homepages don’t cost a thing. Bring services into the market,” explained Dominique Mangiatordi using his expertise as marketing executive from the Proximedia Agency and his experience in the marketing of websites and services for about 20,000 small/mid-sized companies in Belgium. Mangiatordi and fifteen other speakers laid out some interesting points to the approximately 100 guests at the Yellow Pages Today Workshops on April 14 in Stuttgart.
Peter Buxton and Jesper Simonsen, the organizers of the one-day event, kicked things off with a thesis that there is yet a lot of potential for directory publications and local search engines to further focus on small/mid-sized companies, as only about fifty percent of which is to be found online. In light of the ever-growing competition between the search engine giant Google and Online-Pure-Plays in the yellow pages/telephone book segment, websites and mobile services offer interesting potential to win new customers and improve relations with current customers. Springer Buying Up kaufDA

The Axel Springer AG now wants a piece of the online deal search: the media trust has now taken over 74.9 percent of the online deal catalogue and mobile couponing market leader kaufDA.
The media has been speculating about the sale of the young, successful catalogue platform for quite some time now. Potential buyers mentioned included the Deutsche Post, various media houses, as well as Otto and Tengelmann. But now Springer has jumped on the opportunity: the media trust spent between an estimated 25 and 30 million euro for kaufDA. Their motivation is pretty clear: the amount of periodicals in newspapers are shrinking and heading over to the internet. The logical result: buy out one of the most successful deal portals and create your own digital ads, or let the competition do it. Read the rest of this entry »

Urbi et Reti – Gaudeamus Mediis Socialibus

The internet was forced to hold its breath for a moment last week. On January 24th, 2011 Anno Domini, Pope Benedict XVI gave social networks his blessing. However, he took the opportunity to warn of misuse.
“As with every other fruit of human ingenuity, the new communications technologies must be placed at the service of the integral good of the individual and of the whole of humanity,” wrote the Pope in his message to believers. “If used wisely, they can contribute to the satisfaction of the desire for meaning, truth and unity which remain the most profound aspirations of each human being.” However, one must be wary of the danger, “such as enclosing oneself in a sort of parallel existence, or excessive exposure to the virtual world.” Read the rest of this entry »
