Wohin?, the iPhone app from FutureTap was just selected as iPhone App of the Week by Apple in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The app has been able to sell over 300,000 licenses, making it the most successful local search app in the App-Store.
The app costs 2.37 Euro in the App Store. There is also a module that can pep up the service to operate in augmented reality, which is free for 30 days and 0.79 Euro after that on top of the regular app. Read the rest of this entry »

Whoa, the search engine giant is throwing another punch: not only is the social network project Google+ Facebook’s biggest competition while still in its test phase, but Google has now taken over the deal provider The Dealmap.

The goal behind this is quite clear: the internet giant can further expand its own service for deals, Google Offers, which has been in the beta phase and only available for few American cities. Google would then become a powerful player in the couponing market. The Dealmap, which went live just last November, already has two million users and is available online and as a mobile application for several US cities as well as London. meinestadt.de is offering something that has been already available from the online directory Das Örtliche since the beginning of the year, and from the local ratings portal Qype since this July: an app for the Windows Phone 7. In cooperation with Microsoft, the city portal developed this special mobile application. The apps for the iPhone and Android smartphones have been available for quite some time.

The app is available in the Windows Marketplace, under http://redir.ec/meinestadt-windowsphone7, to download. The developers have chosen the most popular categories from the vicinity radar for the app, according to allesklar.com. Users that are on-the-go can search for restaurants, cafés, hotels, or ATMs for all German cities and municipalities. Users also receive weather information, events, and film times in the vicinity. The smatphone’s localization is automatically conducted using GPS.

Germany’s market leader for bonus collecting has just released a new version for its application for the iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch. The latest Payback-App, in cooperation with Das Örtliche, now offers users theme channels for local search.
Payback customers that download the latest version of the app in the Apple Store will find a new point in the menu: clicking on “Extras” can show users where the next ATMs are, where the next movie theater is, or when the next cultural event is. The data is delivered by Das Örtliche. Payback is trying to expand these kinds of local services, according to the app. This ambition is confirmed by DeTeMedien, the carrier for the online directory. The rating community Yelp has expanded the local coupons for its iPhone and Android apps. Up until now, the special offers and check-in deals were available, but users can now click the “Deals” icon on-the-go to search for deals on-the-spot and use them right in the location from their mobile devices.
About a year ago, Yelp brought out the “Deal of the Day”, which was its answer to the online coupon hype. Now there are about twenty metropolises deal offerings available. The mobile coupons are definitely stirring up a commotion in the couponing competition and joining the bandwagon in location-based services. The user number are definitely making a point: Yelp counted 50 million users just in the month of May, and 4.5 million mobile users.

The self-proclaimed largest couponing marketplace in Germany Coupies is now offering in addition to its apps for iPhone, Android, Blackberry, and Nokie, as well as the operating system Windows Mobile and Java, a new web standard HTML5 based browser-application. This is hardly different to the iPhone app, claims the company, but does have one advantage: it works on many more devices and allows more people to use the mobile discounts. Europe’s largest rating portal, Qype, has finally released a version of its app for the Windows Phone 7 in cooperation with Microsoft, following the release of the apps for Blackberry, iPhone, and Nokia.
The fact that about 25 percent of all user ratings are composed on a mobile device lead the internet giant to cooperate with the rating portal, according to a press release. Microsoft’s goal: a perfect Qype app for its Windows Phone 7. The app is available for download directly under http://www.qype.com/go-mobile, and offers an exclusive feature for the smartphone: searches can be specialized using a filter and lets users see where their friend are on a map.
