Local Search 2009. Where next?

At the start of each year, it is usual to read prognoses of trends for the coming months – so also in the Local Search sphere. The outlook indicates many developments especially in the mobile sector.

At least, that’s what Greg Sterling of Screenwerk sees in his crystal ball.  His view is based on the theory that large areas of the internet, such as social networking, will in the future be available for mobile use, as users increasingly buy and use laptops, netbooks and other mobile devices.  Michael Boland of Localsearchnews also shares this opinion.  In his eyes, the iPhone is playing a pivotal rôle in the development of the mobile internet, with local search coming out the big winner.   He sees a clear connection between local search and mobile applications.

Alongside the mobile development of the internet, Sterling also sees the geolocation of PCs also being of growing significance.  And in the marketing zone, current development continues to expand: small and medium sized companies are increasingly using new advertising methods such as video and online marketing.  This trend is having a detrimental effect on the print media, especially newspapers and printed directories.

Most local search services are already equipping themselves for the future, implementing not only the static internet, but for quite a while have also targeted the mobile area. Many firms already offer mobile applications (such as DasTelefonbuch, GoYellow, Qype, 11880.com).  And with Ö-Navi, DasÖrtliche has been a pioneer in ad-financed, gratis-use for mobile navigation.

amAze: LocatioNet Systems and Telegate cooperate

The Israeli company LocatioNet Systems and Telegate AG have joined forces., to jointly present amAze – a free offboard navigation software providing local search for mobile phones.

In a press release, LocatioNet gave notice of the collaboration. The service provided is based on the existing mobile phone navigation service amAze (launched in 2007) and will retain its original name. In Germany, the software is presented in collaboration with the online branch directory 11880.com, run by Telegate AG. Users can therefore search Telegate’s databases for companies in Germany and generate directions straight to these undertakings. Of course amAze also provides directions to other locations, using speech instructions or visual routing per map. In order to use the service, one requires a GPS-ready device- either built-in or connected externally via Bluetooth. Alongside with the navigation feature, users can also access detailed map views, high resolution satellite images and weather reports.

Similar to comparable services such as Skobbler (see our post) or Ö-Navi (another post), amAze is also free of charge and is financed through advertising. Costs to the user are incurred as always according to their telephone and data packages from the mobile phone service providers. amAze is also accessible on the mobile internet page directly on a mobile web browser.

11880.com now with ratings from other portals

As of January this year 11880.com has been offering its users the chance to read ratings gathered from other providers or to deliver their own ratings (see our post).  This Web2.0 feature has now been further expanded.

11880.com & Autoplenum.deTo this end, this information portal is collaborating with other portals and has combined the gathered ratings into its own web presence. A post in the company blog lists the partners in this enterprise as the information and ratings platform for drivers Autoplenum.de, the patient portal DocInsider.de, as well as gastronomy sites Hotel.de and Restaurant-Kritik.de.

Through this cooperation, the blog post states that there are at present over 80,000 ratings to be found on 11880.com.  The company plans to broaden its partner base in the future.

Telegate markets Google AdWords

Telegate GoogleTelegate has announced a strategic alliance with Google. In the future, businesses represented in the Telegate’s online directories 11 88 0 and Klicktel can advertise using Google’s Pay-per-click (PPC) “AdWords“, for which the advertiser only pays when the ads are click-on by users.  Telegate joins the fray in competition with other local-PPC providers such as Yahoo! or suchen.de.

As announced by the enterprise in a press release, the cooperation stands to profit above all small and medium size undertakings.  This target group has historically under-utilized this marketing opportunity. Now firms signed as directory clients with Telegate can now also choose to add search engine marketing via Google.  Thus, a company can have better localized and context-based access to potential clients, by registering specific keywords with the Google AdWords program, with these ads displayed in either or both the online presences of Telegate and Google.

Of course, such a deal needs to bring benefits to both the directory-provider and the search engine giant: Telegate, sees the collaboration as strengthening their position as ‘leading’ special local search provider in Germany. Google profits in turn through the experience and ‘know-how’ of the 400-strong Telegate team.

New Cooperation between local directory services

The person search service yasni.de has joined forces with 11880.com, and YellowMap has integrated the ratings offering of autoplenum.de

yasni.de and 11880.com
yasni + 11880Recently, yasni.de, a search engine for people, utilizing Web 2.0 elements, and the information portal 11880.com (Telegate AG) have been collaborating. As a result, telephone numbers and addresses are now obtainable on yasni.de, as announced by the presenters in a press release. Conversely, 11880.com now links a person search, by the provision of a link labeled “What does yasni.de know about this person’s name?” directly to yasni.de.

Steffen Rühl, founder of yasni.de, explained this new strategic cooperation in its quest to expand and reinforce its leading position as the most-used person search engine in Germany. This service was started at the end of October 2007 under the motto “What does the Net know about you?” It accesses publicly available information on the web around the name search. Additionally registered users are also able to submit their own profiles.

YellowMap offers ratings from autoplenum.de
The “Knowledge platform for Drivers” – autoplenum.de has been cooperating with online directory YellowMap, as of mid-February 2008.

YelloMap + autoplenum
As announced by autoplenum.de in a press-statement, users of YellowMap who search for car showrooms, dealerships or repair shops, are now able to access autoplenum.de member ratings (on a separate tab) of these facilities, as well as their addresses. This facilitates users of YellowMap to gain additional insight and assist their qualified choice, without unpleasant surprises. A direct link to the autoplenum.de website also enables YellowMap users to share their own experiences and ratings of this business branch, with autoplenum.de users.
