The free local search application “Places” from TomTom is now available for Android smartphone users, just three months after the launch of the iPhone app. Users can find stores, restaurants, and sights in their vicinity within eight countries. The app combines data from ten million POIs (Points of Interest) from local directories in the corresponding country, according to TomTom. The US American product search Milo is launching for the Android and will officially make the status of location-based service. The server describes itself as the market leader for local online shopping. Dank GPS-Technologie des Android-Handys erkennt die Software, so vom Nutzer gewünscht, seinen aktuellen Standort und erhält dadurch Ergebnisse zum unmittelbaren Umkreis.

Die gefundenen Einträge lassen sich direkt anrufen – Dienstleister teilweise auch kostenlos -, per E-Mail kontaktieren oder in das Adressbuch des Endgerätes übertragen. Bei der Kartenansicht kann man zwischen Stadtplankarte, Satellitenbildern und Vogelperspektive wählen und sich vom Routenplaner den Weg zum gewünschten Ziel weisen lassen. Besonderes Schmankerl: Der User kann eine Position abspeichern, die er sich zu einem späteren Zeitpunkt, an dem er sich woanders befindet, auf der Karte anzeigen lassen sowie sich vom Routenplaner dort hinführen lassen. So findet sich zum Beispiel das geparkte Auto wieder.
