Bing Maps, Microsoft’s local search engine, will be bringing its geodata service Streetside to Germany. Starting May 9th, the camera cars will begin photographing Germany’s streets and public squares for the panorama view. Microsoft barely had the opportunity to announce their intentions before data security officers began criticizing the plan, similar to the criticism faced by Google Maps’ service Street View. The Bavarian State Office for Data Protection would like to prohibit the photography of private buildings in the event that Microsoft does not offer a possibility to have the photographs excluded. Using social media outlets as a way to draw in customers has pretty much become mandatory for even directories worldwide. Directories, local search engines, rating portals – they’ve all got the social media fever. An interesting example is the Herold in Austria, who introduced the Facebook application “Locations ilike”. Just how user friendly are local search engines? This was proofed by Sonja Quirmbach, the search engine expert from the Deutsche Telekom, with Dr. Dirk Lewandowski, professor at the Hamburg University of Applied Scientists. Die neue App von Bing Maps zeigt dem Nutzer auf der Karte, welche Veranstaltungen in seiner Nähe stattfinden.

Chris Pendleton vom Bing-Team hat ein neues Feature im Blog der Suchmaschine vorgestellt: Wer sich die neue Applikation „Local Events“, die kostenlos zum Download auf der Site bereit steht, auf seinen Rechner lädt, dem werden auf der Karte Veranstaltungen zum gewünschten Ort gezeigt. Die Ergebnisse lassen sich nach Art und Zeitpunkt filtern. Mit einer Merkfunktion kann der User favorisierte Events speichern oder auch anderen mitteilen.

Bing prischt jetzt auch bei der lokalen Suche vor. Die  „neue“ Suchmaschine von Microsoft hat laut einer Nielsen-Studie inzwischen einen Marktanteil von weltweit rund neun Prozent erobert.

Damit hat Bing mehr Bewegung auf den Markt gebracht als dieser in den letzten Jahren jemals hatte. Kein Wunder, dass die Suchmaschine ihren Usern immer mehr Features und Anwendungsmöglichkeiten präsentiert. Wer auf das Bing Search Blog geht, findet dort jetzt eine ausführliche Anleitung zur lokalen Suche. Im Mittelpunkt steht dabei die „Scorecard“, zu Deutsch also die Wertungsliste, die es vorerst nur für die USA gibt.

Wer zum Beispiel ein Restaurant in einer bestimmten Stadt sucht und auf einen Treffer klickt, bekommt in einer Übersicht alles zusammengestellt, was ihn zu diesem Restaurant interessieren könnte – sprich also neben den Standard-Kontaktangaben auch Öffnungszeiten, Fotos, Berichte von Gästen und eben die Scorecard, die die Wertungen von Besuchern nach Kategorien wie Atmosphäre, Qualität des Essens und Service als Balkendiagramm zusammenfasst.

Der Routenplaner von Bing Maps führt danach ans gewünschte Ziel, das man sich auf der Karte oder auch aus der Vogelperspektive anschauen kann. Was meint das Blog selbst über die lokale Suche? „Das Ding rockt.

Microsoft hat seine lokale Suche Bing Maps– ehemals Live Search Maps – mit jeder Menge neuer Luftaufnahmen aus aller Welt ausgestattet.

Wie Business Manager Toni Pelg im Windows Live Blog verkündet, hat man dabei neue Fotos von über einer Million Quadratmetern der Erdoberfläche hinzugefügt. Dabei wurden viele Regionen berücksichtigt, die bisher noch gar nicht mit Luftbildern vertreten waren – unter anderem große Teile Indiens, Chinas und Afrikas.
