Local Search: America Thinking “Yellow”

When Americans search for local services, they trust their Yellow Pages more than online search engines, at least according to the first “Local Media Tracking” study conducted by the market-research from Burke in contract with Yellow Pages Association.. Read the rest of this entry »

GelbeSeiten starten semantisches Targeting

“GelbeSeiten remains clearly the number one of branch directories – online and offline”, recently announced by GelbeSeiten Marketing GmbH in a press release. This is supported by the current data (regarding the online sphere) released by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Online Forschung (aka AGOF).

The statement concerns the conclusions of the AGOF, the leading online marketer in Germany. The AGOF publishes quarterly the market media study “Internet facts“.  The latest evaluation  appeared mid December 2008, covering the 3rd quarter  2008.

This analysis counted an average of 3,05 million unique visitors monthly to GelbeSeiten, for the period July – September 2008. This is 19% up from the 2nd quarter total million unique visitors. Y=The portal thus moved up to position 33 in the study, and became the most visited site of its kind during this period, at least in a limited field.  This was discussed by Uwe Frigg, COO of GelbeSeiten Marketing GmbH, in a press report. “Contrary to other competitors, we do not obscure our market by combining our field of expertise of branch directories and telephone directories, with private customer data.

Moreover, GelbeSeiten is the only one of the studied local search services that exclusively offers searches of commercial addresses.  In comparison with other local search services analyzed by AGOF, GelbeSeite was actually trumped by DasTelefonbuch (place 15), DasOertliche (place 15) and meinestadt.de (place 17). Lower ranked were Qype (place 58 with  an average 1,49 million users),  tying with Klicktel (also 1,49 million users).  GoYellow was even further down the list at place 65 and pointoo at place 101.

Points at youbizz.de

The start of 2008 saw the appearance of a new German online-branch book called youbizz.de. Above all the service was to provide free advertising for companies – however not many firms have availed themselves of this offer, as after more than half a year, the search results are really sparse.

youbizz.deThe portal is operated by Reed Business Information GmbH in Munich, a daughter company of the worldwide specialist publishers Reed Elsevier plc. In a press release, it was stated that Reed Business is concentrating in Germany on four market segments: architecture, medicine, technology and e-business, and publishes ten specialist magazines, including titles such as “Detail:, “Ärztliche Praxis” [en=Medical Practice] and “Digital Production”.

With youbizz.de, Reed Business wants to enable companies and undertakings to advertise their services free online, in an innovative manner.  However at first glance, this service does not appear to present anything innovative.  Similar to other local search services, one one can enter a keyword (e.g. by category or products) as well as a location name or postal code, and generate a results list.  In comparison to other web-directories or local search engines, the number of generated results seems wanting.  There is also no map search, however the location of chosen results are able to be displayed on a Google-Map.  And there is no route planner.

New and different on youbizz, is that every service provider/undertaking can decide individually how prominent their firm is to be placed in the results list.  This is determined by so-called Bizz-Punkte [en=Bizz-Points]. Every undertaking can be rated for free by providing detailed information about themselves and thus be awarded with a ‘points’ rating.  As explained by Reed Business, points can be accrued by the provision of detailed contact information, news updates, press releases, or uploaded logos and corporate data. Additionally, users have the ability to recommend company profiles. For these recommendations, firms are also able to collect further Bizz-Points.  The more points a firm collect, the better the placement in the results listing.

The points, according to Ramon Parma of Reed Business Information GmbH, are used not only by the advertising undertakings, but also by the searchers, as the points indicate detailed and current information about firms.  Firm which enter themselves on youbizz.de are not required however to conform to any specific category system.  As a result they are required to suggest their own keywords, thus determining their preferred search term under which they would like to be identified. In this way, not only companies can avail themselves of this service, but also products could be used as keywords.

SEO for local search services: a fiercely contested battle for the top rankings

Recently the latest edition of the Search Engine Marketing Index SUMAXX was released. In the category “local search”, much has changed in the period since the last analysis.

Although there are numerous local search services, many users, seeking local search results, continue to use the web-search giants Google and Yahoo. Therefore it is important for operators of local search and online branch directories, to have their services reflected in the generated results (of the giants). For this sector, SEO (search engine optimization) is the magic word. SUMAXX indicates those providers who have successfully optimized their pages, frequently being found among the top results of the most important German web search engines,

The rankings (including local search services, among many other branches of the business) are assembled quarterly by the Search Engine Marketing agency Bloofusion Germany GmbH (see an earlier post). The 1st Quarter 2008 results are now available.

In the segment “Local Search”, Bloofusion notes much movement in the first 3 months of 2008, in comparison to the last quarter of 2007. Stadtbranchenbuch.com and goyellow.de have moved up two places to places one and two respectively. The online-directory gelbeseiten.de also has attained improved SEO, thus shunting up five positions to the new #3 position, followed by cylex.de and yahoo.com. The big loser with respect to SEO, according to SUMAXX, is the city-portal meinestadt.de, which slipped from position 2 to 10. On the other hand, the highest rank newcomer is local search machine suchen.de, which moved up nine places to position 7. Yellowmap.de also managed to find its way into the Top Ten in place 8. The ninth ranking was gained by dasoertliche.de
