Facebook Places and Deals Out
The social network Facebook has been given a facelift in the past week: Almost one year after its release, Facebook announced early last week that its location-based service Facebook Places would be killed off. Later in the week, the network also announced that its online-coupon market, Deals, would also be killed off. But this doesn’t completely mean that Facebook is leaving the location-based market. The social network added that its check-in deal service will still be offered, albeit a bit different than previously. Read the rest of this entry »
Discover More with View and Foursquare
And the check-ins have done it again! Well, sorta…newcomer View is kinda like a check-in, but you don’t have to check-in. Instead, you just open up the app and voilà!, you get information about various things in your vicinity.
This relevant information, called a “discovery” is automatically displayed in realtime. Examples of discoveries could be historical facts, passwords to wi-fi, best waiter in the restaurant, etc. In fact, there is no real limit to the amount of information you can receive, seeing as how anyone can post their discoveries from home in the categories News, Tip, or Deal. The app uses Foursquare and Google APIs to add the corresponding location. Read the rest of this entry »
Check-Ins Gaining Points
Social media has pretty much revolutionized the way we communicate. But there is still a lot to be done, especially in the world of mobile check-ins. There are definitely two shining stars in this relatively young realm, namely Foursquare and SCVNGR.
Shortly after the DLD Conference 2011 (we report), Foursquare announced that it had over 6 million registered users. In addition, the service announced in its official blog last week that it had released the app in five new languages, including French, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and German. This will make the check-in service more attractive to markets outside of the US, which have been in need of a jumpstart after a long hibernation. Read the rest of this entry »

Gowalla: Pimp my Check-in
Gowalla has been creeping further and further away from the pure check-in concept, especially since they started allowing videos and pictures to be posted in March. Now, the company is developing the fresh new “Highlights” feature into an attractive alternative to Google Place Pages: City Pages. For corporate customers, the company has some more new ideas. Foursquare? Gifted!
Who ever said that? There are some good ideas from the check-in providers. Gifi is a good example: with their iPhone App, one can donate gifts to friends when one checks into a certain location on Foursquare. Read the rest of this entry »
Mayor – who cares?
Even if – or maybe even because – Facebook just fueled the check-in hype with Places, the veterans in the market, Foursquare and Gowalla, are being as boring as rocks. At least Foursquare wants to release a new feature, though. Read the rest of this entry »
Now Even More Social: Check-Ins by SCVNGR
Check-ins have actually always been social: whether through Foursquare, Gowalla, and whatever other programs that are out there, checking-in and letting your friends know where you are and what you’re up to is just about the most “social” feature available by location-based sevices. So what does it mean when competitor SCVNGR is talking about “social check-ins?” Read the rest of this entry »
