DasÖrtliche and HRS: free hotel reservations by cellphone

DasÖrtliche now offers its users a practical new feature. Using its mobile portal, cellphone users can book hotel rooms, using a free phone call.

This is made possible by cooperation between the telecommunication directory with the hotel booking service “Hotel Reservation Service” (HRS).

Users with internet-capable phones en route, who access mobil.dasoertliche.de, to search for suitable hotel accommodation, are then forwarded to the HRS-hotel site.  As detailed in a press release, users who click on a hotel link will be rerouted through the HRS-call center, where a direct free telephone connection to the hotel is facilitated.  If the desired accommodation is full, the user can then return to the HRS site and try suitable alternatives.

GelbeSeiten.de: Leading online branch directory

“GelbeSeiten remains clearly the number one of branch directories – online and offline”, recently announced by GelbeSeiten Marketing GmbH in a press release. This is supported by the current data (regarding the online sphere) released by the Arbeitsgemeinschaft Online Forschung (aka AGOF).

The statement concerns the conclusions of the AGOF, the leading online marketer in Germany. The AGOF publishes quarterly the market media study “Internet facts“.  The latest evaluation  appeared mid December 2008, covering the 3rd quarter  2008.

This analysis counted an average of 3,05 million unique visitors monthly to GelbeSeiten, for the period July – September 2008. This is 19% up from the 2nd quarter total million unique visitors. Y=The portal thus moved up to position 33 in the study, and became the most visited site of its kind during this period, at least in a limited field.  This was discussed by Uwe Frigg, COO of GelbeSeiten Marketing GmbH, in a press report. “Contrary to other competitors, we do not obscure our market by combining our field of expertise of branch directories and telephone directories, with private customer data.

Moreover, GelbeSeiten is the only one of the studied local search services that exclusively offers searches of commercial addresses.  In comparison with other local search services analyzed by AGOF, GelbeSeite was actually trumped by DasTelefonbuch (place 15), DasOertliche (place 15) and meinestadt.de (place 17). Lower ranked were Qype (place 58 with  an average 1,49 million users),  tying with Klicktel (also 1,49 million users).  GoYellow was even further down the list at place 65 and pointoo at place 101.

Ö-Navi – Mark 2

As early as mid-2007, DasÖrtliche posted a free software program Ö-Navi, to enable cell phones to function as navigation instruments. A new update of this program has been realeased, including several new features up its sleeve.

Actually Ö-Navi 2 is still in Beta-testing (as of mid-August), however its only recently made its official debut in a press release.

To use Ö-Navi, one requires a GPS-capable cell phone, or have the ability to connect to an external GPS device. As in the earlier versions, the software is financed through on-screen advertising, allowing its cost to the customer to be ‘free’. As Ö-Navi 2 is a so-called ‘offboard’ navigation system – using data not installed on the cell phone itself, but rather using data transfer bandwidth for every route enquiry accessed through the software – costs are incurred for data used. These costs are billed by the network provider.

Ö-Navi 2 delivers not only route descriptions, but also for example offers access to the entire databank of the online-directory of DasÖrtliche. Thereby, one can search for private or commercial addresses and receive directions. This was already possible with the first version- new in v.2 is that one can call many of the firms represented there for free from the application.

Another new feature are the so-called Zenlets. According to the operators, these are individual add-on modules, based on new technologies and easily integrated; one can check weather at the destination or look for the closest cash machine. Zenlets can also be developed by uers, and the uses for ‘label’ companies make them well suited for tailer-made applications.

Visually, there have also been changes – Ö-Navi2 presents an easier overview, and the new vector maps allow for reduced load times and improved display.

At present this new edition is still only available for a few select cell phones, but this will change.  DasÖrtliche telss that by the end of 2008, it is hoped to have Ö-navi 2 available for all current mobile phones, using a Java-based platform, after which the first edition will be phased out.

To check which current models can use Ö-Navi, check here – one can also download the new Cell phone navigation software, assuming the user has a compatible phone.

SUMAXX: meinestadt.de on top again

Every quarter, the online marketing agency Bloofusion publishes ‘SUMAXX’ – an evaluation of the search-engine spectrum covering a range of websites in various thematic areas. One of these areas is that of ‘local search’. The analysis for 2Q 2008 has recently been released.

The upshot shows meinestadt.de as the big winner.  In the first quarter of 2008, this city-portal had slipped to 10th position (see our post). Now, they are back at the top. Another player to improve their position is the online-directory Gelbeseiten.de – still in place 3, but now ahead of its competitor GoYellow.de, which has slipped back 2 slots.

Improvement has been demonstrated by the local search engine suchen.de, who moved up from 7th to 5th place, and also by the telephone directory DasÖrtliche.de, who improved by one position to 8th place.

SUMAXXBloofusion explains the SUMAXX-Ratings are currently offered for 5 thematic areas: local search, tourism, medicine & health, electronics and financial services. In order to evaluate these, the search engine marketing specialists submit approximately 500 differing search requests (for example, ranging from “doctor Munich” to “interest homebuilding”) to Google, MSN/Live and Yahoo! The generated results are then evaluated and rated, showing which websites in specific thematic areas predominate, whether as a consequence of search machine optimization or search engine compatibility of their algorithms.

Media Directory Association awards “Branch Oscars”

The Association of German Information and Directory Media (VDAV) recently presented the German Directory Media Prize 2008.

As reported by the VDAV, the winner was announced during the VDAV-BranchMeet, a congress of the German directory media industry, which took place from 18 -20 June 2008 in Bremen. The ‘Branch Oscars’ were assigned in three categories for especially innovative products and applications.

Ö-NaviIn the ‘Electronic Directory Media’, the victor was the free mobile phone navigation Ö-Navi, a product of DasÖrtliche. This free software has been on offer by the telecommunications directory portal since mid-2007, with which one can effectively convert a mobile phone into a navigation device. Financed entirely through adverts, the user receives not only a route description, but also has access to the entire online-database of DasÖrtliche, therewith all private and business addresses and is able to connect this data to the navigation interface.

The decision of the award for second place was deemed problematic by the 6-person jury, resulting in a tie for 2nd place. The first of the ’silver’ prizes went to the mobile version of meinestadt.de. The mobile version of the town-portal was praised by VDAV, according to its operators Allesklar.com AG, especially for its wide-spectrum offering of local information, including their mobile ’situations vacant’ section and the ability to receive job training classifieds, via free SMS.

The 2nd ‘Silver’ trophy went to the online-cooperation between the association “gesundheitstadt berlin” (en=’health city berlin’) and the branch portal “gewusst wo” (en=’knowing where’). The operators of gewusst-wo.de, the publications group Beleke, announced this in a press release.

Alongside the digital sphere, prizes were also awarded to print media and marketing-events. All prize winners can be found on the VDAV website.

SEO for local search services: a fiercely contested battle for the top rankings

Recently the latest edition of the Search Engine Marketing Index SUMAXX was released. In the category “local search”, much has changed in the period since the last analysis.

Although there are numerous local search services, many users, seeking local search results, continue to use the web-search giants Google and Yahoo. Therefore it is important for operators of local search and online branch directories, to have their services reflected in the generated results (of the giants). For this sector, SEO (search engine optimization) is the magic word. SUMAXX indicates those providers who have successfully optimized their pages, frequently being found among the top results of the most important German web search engines,

The rankings (including local search services, among many other branches of the business) are assembled quarterly by the Search Engine Marketing agency Bloofusion Germany GmbH (see an earlier post). The 1st Quarter 2008 results are now available.

In the segment “Local Search”, Bloofusion notes much movement in the first 3 months of 2008, in comparison to the last quarter of 2007. Stadtbranchenbuch.com and goyellow.de have moved up two places to places one and two respectively. The online-directory gelbeseiten.de also has attained improved SEO, thus shunting up five positions to the new #3 position, followed by cylex.de and yahoo.com. The big loser with respect to SEO, according to SUMAXX, is the city-portal meinestadt.de, which slipped from position 2 to 10. On the other hand, the highest rank newcomer is local search machine suchen.de, which moved up nine places to position 7. Yellowmap.de also managed to find its way into the Top Ten in place 8. The ninth ranking was gained by dasoertliche.de
