Google: Fine of 100,000 Euro for Street View

The French data protection agency CNIL has issued a fine of 100,000 Euro against Google. The reason is that Google Street View vehicles did not only record French streets, but also gathered data from WiFi networks, .
Investigations began at the end of 2009 and the beginning of 2010 into the allegations that Google had violated data protection laws. In May 2010, CNIL demanded that the internet giant terminate all collection of data without explicit permission from individuals, as well surrender the gathered information from France.

Google Maps: more 360º views online

Whether along a canal in Amsterdam or Tower Bridge in London, Google Maps now allows virtual strolls through even more European cities than before.

Relaunched in mid March (2009), Google has added umpteen new streetviews to its local search service. This was announced by Kenzu Fong Hing in the Google Lat Long blog.

First time streetviews have now been introduced for several cities in the United Kingdom and the Netherlands – London, Liverpool, Manchester, Amsterdam and Rotterdam. Panorama photos of France, Italy and Spain have been expanded – for example, per mouse-click one can cruise the streets of Strasbourg, Reims and Cannes, or Genoa, Parma or Saragossa.

To find out which areas contain the panorama-views, one needs to drag the yellow ‘pegman’ around the map, using the mouse. Regions are marked in blue, where StreetView is already available.

Further areas are anticipated in the near future- according to the Schweitzer Tagesanzeiger newspaper, StreetView vehicles are documenting the streets of Switzerland. Germany saw the Google cars in 2008 (see our report).

Using this feature, the armchair traveler can sit at his computer (or mobile phone) and discover multiple locations around the globe. Reaction to this service remains however divided (see our post): especially at the moment, complaints are gathering momentum in the UK, according to the local media (eg. the daily newspaper The Independant). As a result, Google has been required to removed numerous photos.

Tour-de-France-Route in Google Street View

The 95th Tour de France has been taking place from July 5 -27, 2008. For this great cycling event, Google has placed its first Street Views of France on-line.

Google Tour de FranceThe 360° Views are to be found in Google Maps, Google’s local search wing. By clicking on “Street View”, a virtual view of the entire race routing is to be found. What’s more, the view is presented from the rider’s perspective, as was reported by Google employee Daniel Ratner in the Google Lat Long Blog.  According to Ratner, the absolute latest features of Street View have been implemented for the 21-stage France tour, encompassing ‘Face Blurring’ and high image resolution (see our post).

Tour de France- Street ViewSo, for the first time users are able to access panorama views of Europe, via Google Maps.  Until this introduction, users were only able to view USA cities, national parks and recreational areas in Street View.  The Tour-de-France route is only the beginning ― Google has already announced that views of other European cities and areas will be forthcoming (see our report).  At the moment, German cities are being documented (as noted in the Google Watch Blog). Street-View cars have been already spied in Munich and Berlin– confirmed by a report in the Berlin Tagesspiegel, which also mentions that Google is also shooting in Frankfurt am Main.  When these Street Views will be posted on-line is any body’s guess.
