Google Snaps Up Deal Service The Dealmap

Whoa, the search engine giant is throwing another punch: not only is the social network project Google+ Facebook’s biggest competition while still in its test phase, but Google has now taken over the deal provider The Dealmap.

The goal behind this is quite clear: the internet giant can further expand its own service for deals, Google Offers, which has been in the beta phase and only available for few American cities. Google would then become a powerful player in the couponing market. The Dealmap, which went live just last November, already has two million users and is available online and as a mobile application for several US cities as well as London. Google Off to a Great Start

Lary Page can be excited about the positive reception of the Google+ project and a record turnover for the second quarter of the year. Meanwhile, Facebook has received a poor grade in the subject of user satisfaction from a study.
The social media market is ready for a new player, according to the census administered by the 2011 American Customer Satisfaction Index (ACSI) E-Business Report, which was conducted with the market research institute ForeSee Results. The social network Facebook received the poorest grade of all the social networks that were analyzed in customer satisfaction. The winner in the category for social media was Wikipedia. But who could have been in first place in the portal and search engine sectors? That’s right: Google. Because the study was conducted last month, Google+ is not included in the study, as the project wasn’t launched until afterwards. But according to a press release by ForeSee, the low results that Facebook has received give Google+ a good start, that is, if the service can offer users something better. For quite some time, the Google recommendation button with which users could rate websites or search results with “this is cool” was only available on the English version of google.com. Quora, Gowalla & Co.: Is Google offering “Real Time”?

Google just continues in the direction of Twitter and Facebook. The search engine has now integrated in addition to the two other social communities like Quora and Gowalla in its real-time search. User questions, answers, posts and ratings – all food for the lagging Google feature. However, with a “lucky” algorithm, the posts can also show up in the universal search.

Locationgate: Apple and Google Know Where You’ve Been

Oh boy…it’s not really that much of a surprise, right? But the outrage is still quite prevalent. At a conference in the USA, IT specialists revealed that iPhones and iPads with UMTS interface save the locations of their users using mobile networks. What really gets the blood boiling is that this data is not encrypted and can be viewed by just about anyone with the help of some special software. Read the rest of this entry »
