Apple Receives Patent for Location-Based Information System

The US-Patent Office has promised Apple a patent for location-based information services that may effect other providers of location-based services. The industrial property law with the code RE42,927 and the title “System and method for obtaining an using location specific information” is broad enough to affect all mobile services using location-based material. T-Online.de Starting Up Local Search
The 25 million user strong general interest online portal T-Online.de is now joining the local search bandwagon: as a response to the growing demand for local services and information, the service massively expanded its regional offering at the beginning of October. Users now have access to 346 city and county portals with regional to local news, information, and services available, according to a press release from the Deutsche Telekom, the carrier of the online portal. Smartphones: Location-Based Services’ Growing Demand
Just in time for the release of Apple’s iPhone 4S on October 14th of this year, there were camp-like conditions in front of Apple stores worldwide. Some waited the entire night in sleeping bags for the opening. Hard to believe: every second German who has a smartphone is interested in purchasing the iPhone 4S. This was the conclusion of a recent study conducted by Gelbe Seiten. In addition: smartphone users value the local search apps right behind the basic functions. Tom Tom: Local Search Now With Data from Gelbe Seiten
The new live-service from the navigation specialist Tom Tom is now offering local information about stores, restaurants, or service providers, in addition to the local search from Google Maps and Places. Know Where With “Wohin?”
Wohin?, the iPhone app from FutureTap was just selected as iPhone App of the Week by Apple in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. The app has been able to sell over 300,000 licenses, making it the most successful local search app in the App-Store.
The app costs 2.37 Euro in the App Store. There is also a module that can pep up the service to operate in augmented reality, which is free for 30 days and 0.79 Euro after that on top of the regular app. Read the rest of this entry »

Enormous Growth Expected for Location Based Services
The US market analyzers from Pyramid Research are forecasting a boom in Location Based Services (LBS), despite mobile network providers are dealing with data protection for saving personal user data: the main profit should come from mobile, location-based advertising.
The worldwide market volume for LBS are displayed in the Pyramid Study “Location-Based Services: Market Forecast, 2011-2015” and is expected to expand the 2.8 billion USD profits from last year to 10.3 billion USD by 2015. The main profit should come from mobile location-based advertising: the branch invested 588 million in 2010, and the experts expect this to raise to 6.2 billion USD by 2015. That would make mobile, location-based advertising responsible for about 35 percent of the entire mobile advertising market, and about 60 percent of total profits. Read the rest of this entry »
